The most commonly asked questions answered
As EMSculpt is relatively new to the world of body sculpting, we have found that many patients have questions about the treatment and the results that can be achieved.
Therefore, we have listed below some frequently asked questions to explain fully how this treatment is becoming one of the most sought after in the UK, so you can make an informed decision as to whether it’s right for you.
What is EMSculpt?
EMSculpt is a non-invasive, FDA approved treatment to build and strengthen muscle and improve tone in the abdomen, buttocks, thighs and arms. A 30-minute treatment is equivalent to 20,000 sit ups or squats. It is the only procedure to help both women and men build muscle to sculpt their bodies. EMSCUPT can tone and tighten the abdomen and is the world’s first non-invasive buttock lifting procedure. EMSCULPT is the only device which can build muscle and burn fat at the same time. EMSCULPT also creates the world’s first non-invasive butt lift procedure and is superb for sculpting abs and increasing muscle mass..
How does EMSculpt work?
The non-invasive HIFEM (High-Intensity Focused Electromagnetic) technology induces supramaximal muscle contractions much stronger and faster than achievable through voluntary exercise. Four 30- minute treatments, performed at least 2 days apart, are recommended for best results, though more treatments can improve the area further. The vigorous contractions trigger a metabolic change in the overlying fat that leads to destruction of a percentage of the fat cells. Seven published studies showed an average of 16% increased muscle thickness and 19% decreased fat thickness in the abdomen. The studies also demonstrated over 10% reduction in the diastasis recti- the separation between the left and right abdomen muscles that is stretched by pregnancy. EMSCULPT may not be suitable for those who have a large amount of visceral fat, but more for those with small areas of stubborn, subcutaneous (pinchable) fat.
How is EMSculpt Different from going to the Gym?
EMsculpt technology contracts 100% of the muscle fibres (myofibrils) for up to 100% of the duration of the treatment time. During a workout at the gym, an amateur athlete would typically be able to voluntary contract a maximum of 35-40% of the muscle fibres (a professional athlete may be able to voluntary contract 55% of the muscle fibres). The end result of EMsculpt technology is a much more targeted and intense work out that would be physically impossible to replicate in the gym yourself.
Am I a good candidate for EMSculpt?
Anyone who wants to strengthen their abdominal, buttock or thigh muscles can benefit from the EMSCULPT procedure. The best candidates, who are most likely to achieve visible, satisfying results, are of normal weight, exercise regularly, and eat a healthy diet.
What happens during an EMSculpt treatment?
Whilst you lay back and relax, one of our consultants will place a large flat paddle to the area of concern. An appropriate setting will be selected and the sensation of strong muscular contractions will be experienced. This ‘tensing’ of the muscles can be held for seconds at a time, interspersed with a relaxing tapping sensation.Once the treatment has finished, you’ll be able to return to your daily activities with no discomfort or downtime.
What does it feel like?
The EMSCULPT procedure feels like an intensive workout, as your muscles are undergoing a vigorous series of contractions every few minutes for a total of 30 minutes. There is also a prickling sensation during the treatment.
Will I be sore after an EMSculpt treatment?
During a workout at the gym: Different muscle groups are specifically targeted and the muscle fibres are damaged (muscle protein breakdown). Metabolic stress is also caused by a build up of lactic acid and a drop in pH within the working muscles. Following the workout : A protein called mTOR stimulates muscle protein synthesis (healing), more filaments are added to each muscle fibre and the muscle mass increases (hypertrophy). In a traditional gym workout, muscle damage and lactic acid often cause delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) lasting several days. EMsculpt technology not only delivers superior muscle hypertrophy, it does so without DOMS. Discomfort post EMsculpt procedure is limited to a slight tenderness in the treatment area.
Is there any downtime?
EMSCULPT is non-invasive and requires no recovery time or any pre/post treatment preparation or downtime.
How long does an EMSCULPT treatment take?
Depending on the area to be treated, a typical treatment takes around 30 minutes and a standard course of 4 sessions is usually required for optimum results. We build your treatment protocol around your life; you can even come in during your lunch break for a session with us.
Do I need to do anything before or after a treatment with EMSculpt?
You don’t have to do anything in preparation for your EMSCULPT treatment and there is no downtime or side-effects. It’s a workout without the sweat.
If you go to the gym, we only ask that you refrain from training the day before and the day after your treatments, so that your muscles can relax between treatments.
How soon will I see results?
The muscles treated will feel stronger with each treatment, with increased muscle mass resulting about 2-4 weeks after the 4 treatment series. Improvement of the overlying fat is appreciable by about 3 months after the series is completed. We recommend a good exercise regimen to maintain results.
How long does it last?
Improved muscle tone lasts at least 6 months but longer if you exercise regularly. The fat loss in the abdomen area is thought to be long term due to permanent fat cell destruction.
Is EMSCULPT safe?
EMSCULPT has been clinically tested for safety and efficacy in seven different independent US based, multi-centre studies using the most reputable scientific methods (MRI, CT, US, and Histology).
How many EMSCULPT treatments will I need?
Many patients will notice increased muscle tone after one treatment with EMSCULPT. However, a minimum of four sessions completed in two weeks should be taken to give you the best possible results. To achieve a tighter and more toned silhouette, EMSCULPT could be your new hero to obtain results that no gym class will achieve. We are finding that patients are seeing some amazing results with this innovative, dual-action treatment. If you are looking for a tighter, more defined behind, slimmer, firmer thighs and that dream set of abs, why not try EMSCULPT and see the difference, without sweating it out in the gym 7 days a week.
